The September 11th Fund
By the end of the day the towers fell, The Trust had set up
The September 11th Fund with United Way of New York City. The first
grants were made 11 days later. The Fund stopped taking contributions in
January 2002 and closed its doors at the end of 2004, having distributed all of
the $525 million donated by two million individuals, businesses, and foundations.
It gave $260 million in cash to victims, their families,
displaced workers, and other affected individuals; $191 million to nonprofits
helping victims; $66 million to help rebuild businesses, nonprofits, and
communities; and $10 million for rescue and immediate needs.
The September 11th Fund:
- wrote 45,000 emergency checks to victims
and their families,
- served 343,000 hot meals to rescue workers at
ground zero,
- provided health coverage, counseling, job training, and other services for 200,000 individuals, and
- gave nearly 1,000 loans or grants to small
businesses and nonprofits to help them rebuild.
