Cable access isn't what it used to be. From its start during the bad old days of VHS, Bronx Community Cable Programming Corporation (BRONXNET) now offers a goldmine of award-winning original and courageous programs that are watched and downloaded by thousands every day. As one of the City's five cable access networks, BRONXNET is broadcast to 270,000 households, providing an outlet that catalyzes independent media making. It gives stipends for production, graphic design, and reporting, along with instruction on using all the station's equipment, giving media makers everything they need to produce shows for BRONXNET.
With a $60,000 grant, five young media artists participated in fellowships that helped shape their careers. As an arts production fellow,Desiree Taveras produced weekly episodes of "OPEN," a program focusing on artists and arts organizations. Sonthaya Sriariyakul learned web design and video production and created animated openings for several BRONXNET programs. Jeffrey Edison had a graphic designer fellowship and created graphics for the station's public affairs programs. He demonstrated interest in floor-managing the station's studio-produced programs and ultimately secured a videography position at Street Court TV and a floor-managing position at Black Enterprise Media.
