The last few weeks have been especially cruel to three of the city's well-regarded cultural institutions with one facing the possibility of extinction and another staring down bankruptcy. The third faces an uncertain future.

On Thursday, the New York City Opera said it will file for bankruptcy next week if it can't raise $7 million by Monday. It seems like a real possibility because the institution has only raised about $1.5 million. That announcement followed Dance New Amsterdam's revelation that it plans to close its downtown headquarters next month, a move that could permanently shutter the dance organization, which is already in bankruptcy. Meanwhile, New York Ballet Theater received an eviction notice last month that gives it until next week to find a new home. It is negotiating for an extension.

"It's sad when you see this kind of thing happen," said Kerry McCarthy, program officer-education, arts and the humanities for The New York Community Trust. "It's always been a challenging business to run a nonprofit arts organization in the city, but the arts here are stable."
