Frontline Voices: Michele Kumi Baer of Race Forward on changing the odds for communities of color

The Trust recently had a series of conversations with representatives of nonprofits that are on the front lines helping New Yorkers through the COVID-19 pandemic and addressing the renewed calls for racial justice.

These interactive briefings give our donors a chance to meet community changemakers while providing updates on the various fields we support. The Trust spoke with Michele Kumi Baer, philanthropy project director with Race Forward, to discuss how to eliminate racial disparities in America and transform the country’s systems to achieve positive change for people of color. Race Forward works with communities and organizations across the country to advance racial justice,

In Kumi Baer’s talk with Roderick Jenkins, The Trust’s senior program officer for youth and workforce development, she explained how racism is often endemic in the country’s institutions and how we can all work toward racial equity.

In this clip, Kumi Baer recommends taking cues from those most impacted by racism.

In this clip, Jenkins talks about the Black Lives Matter movement and its impact.

In this clip, Kumi Baer points to the long legacy of racial inequity in America.
