Dionne Boston:

Are you an Access-A-Ride user who wants more transportation, freedom, and reliability?

Erin Schick:
Access-A-Ride is the paratransit service in New York City. So it provides door-to-door transportation for people who are unable to use other forms of transportation.

Patrick Prevost:

They’re my legs. They get through my day-to-day during my week. I use them seven days a week.

Erin Schick:

Access-A-Ride needs to be reformed. It has a lot of a lot of problems.

Dionne Boston:

The most grievous part to me is the lateness, and also the extent of the ride. We shouldn’t be in there more than two hours. It’s just excessive. It really is. I’ve gone from my home in the Bronx, in the Northeast Bronx, all the way to the tip of Long Island to pick up three people to come all the way down to Brooklyn to drop them off first and then me.

Patrick Prevost:

A friend of mine, we were dating, and she would say, “Oh, I wish we could just go out.” And I think, I’d be like, “Listen, I have to make the reservation 24 hours before. I can’t do a same day thing. I would love a same day trip.”

Christina Mitch…:

Mom was in a hospital, so she had to go to the emergency room, and I just came back off of Access-A-Ride maybe an hour ago. So now there’s no way for me to get to the hospital, but I had to call them and tell them it’s an emergency. “My mom’s at a hospital. Can I please get picked up to go to Jamaica Hospital?”

They did pick me up in an hour, hour and a half later to pick me up, but the guy did tell me, “This is only a one time thing you’re going to get. We don’t do a same day service.”

I said, “But it’s an emergency. What if I had an emergency tomorrow?”

He said, “We only do,” he kept from repeating it, “we only do one time for emergencies. That’s it. One time.”

Dionne Boston:

You should be able to have that service. You should. You’re a person. You have friends, you have a life.

Erin Schick:

On-demand paratransit service is an essential element that should be available to everyone who uses paratransit, and I believe that everyone has the ability to benefit from it. And specifically as a young person and as a young person in New York, the Access-A-Ride on-demand pilot has been … It’s really changed the way I think about Access-A-Ride.
